Chronograph watches

A chronograph is an additional feature on a watch, and essentially serves as a stop-watch. Typically, it features 3 small dials on the watch face: one showing minutes lapsed, another showing seconds, and a third displaying fractions of seconds. The chronograph movement is completely independent of the general timekeeping movement of the watch. The Citizen Pro-master has a 1,000th of a second chronograph, which can accurately record the times of a formula one race. Additionally, some chronograph watches also come with tachymeter functions or circumference dials that measure speed or distance. The word chronograph is derived from the Greek “chronos” and “graph”, which stand for “time” and “writing”.

Chronograph watches will usually come with 2 or 3 pushbuttons around the watch case, used to: start and stop the stopwatch and tachymeter dials, reset the functions, and to record a second timing function. The functionality means that chronograph watches are widely used at athletic events and motor-racing events, by yachtsmen, and by pilots. It was the Swatch Watch Company (includes Tissot watches) in the 1990’s that really introduced affordable and fashionable chronographs to the world.
