Pocket Watches

As the name suggests, pocket watches are designed to be carried in a person’s pocket. They were most popular form of watch right from their development in the early 16th century through to the First World War, when trench watches, then wrist watches took over. Traditionally pocket watches come with a chain that allows them to be attached to a waistcoat, lapel or belt loop to help prevent them being dropped. They often have a hinged metal cover to protect the watch face, and these are called fob watches, oft associated with nurses.

There are generally two types of pocket watch: the hunter-case pocket watch (or “fob watches”) and the open-face pocket watch. The hunter-case pocket watch has a spring-hinged circular metal lid that closes over the watch face for protection, whilst an open-faced watch comes without a lid. From the early 1900’s, watches approved for railroad service were required to be cased in open-faced cases with the winding stem at the 12 o’clock position.
