Seiko
Seiko was founded in Japan in 1881 by Kintaro Hattori, and the Japanese word Seiko (pronounced say-koh) means “exquisite” or “success”. The first watch released under the Seiko brand was in 1924, and Seiko are one of the few watchmakers that produce everything entirely in-house (even the oil used in lubricating the watch movements are produced in Seiko factories).
Seiko unveiled the world’s first quartz, or battery-powered, watch to the world in 1969, and interestingly at the time it cost around the same as a medium-sized car! Seiko’s history of innovation is well-known, introducing the first quartz chronograph (stopwatch), and is well-renowned for its Seiko Kinetic watches, which combine the self-energizing attributes of an automatic watch - entirely powered by human movement - with quartz accuracy.
